Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in multiple conversations following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead after three matches played.

A loss will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the side, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second innings on day four, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There is no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley concluded.
