Approximately 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, exterior walls and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a official communication.
Officers say they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored fluid.
The substance had been applied in the pattern of a swastika, they added.
Police then found numerous other marked cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under laws prohibiting the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police report preliminary tests show the substance was likely blood from a person.
"There is still no indication as to its origin; authorities are presently not aware of any harm in relation with the occurrence," they added.
City officials announced they were trying "to resolve the incident" and have asked to the public for tips.
A senior official stated the attack made him stunned and required to be solved quickly.
"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the right-wing violent incident five years ago," he stated on a platform, referring to the killing of nine people by a assailant targeting residents of foreign heritage in 2020.
