In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Wider Government Consultations Taking Place
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
