The fast bowler Set to Play a Key Part in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that Cummins might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. With luck starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
